Artist’s Biography

I began taking photographs over twenty-five years ago. I initially focused my photographic eye on cityscapes around the United States. My early work includes photographs of the World Trade Center in New York taken in 1982. In 2002, I visited Ground Zero and photographed the 9/11 “Tribute In Light” (photo in the Signature e-Gallery).

jose-mrr1a.jpgIn recent years, I have been living in San Jose, California. My photography has focused primarily on American Western Landscapes and wildlife. My journeys have taken me to classic locations in many national parks including Yosemite, Death Valley, Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, Yellowstone, Arches, Canyonlands, and Zion.

My artwork is known for unique and original compositions of lesser known locations in the western US like the Merced National Wildlife Refuge in the San Joachin Valley of California or the “Badlands” of Anza Borrego Desert State Park along the Mexican border. Of the many beautiful places I have traveled, my favorite location is Owens Valley and the Eastern Sierra Mountains of California.

In 2004, while photographing the Big Sur Coast in Monterey County, California, I photographed an air/sea search by the California Army National Guard -126th Medical Company (photo in the Structures & Machines e-Gallery). After donating one of the photographs to the commander of the unit, I was invited to fly in a UH 60 Black Hawk helicopter with the 126th Medical Company on one of their missions.

On most of my journeys, adventures and travels, I am accompanied by my two sweet Rottweiler “photography assistants” Maggie and Rocket who are in charge of protecting my photography equipment and identifying squirrels and rabbits. Rocket can usually be counted on for running in front of the camera before I take a photograph.

Of the many compliments I have received on my artwork, my favorite was from a lady who said, “I have been depressed recently - and looking at your photographs takes me to a place I would rather be. They make me feel better…”

The San Miguel Photography Collection is currently on exhibit in San Jose, California. mrcd-1091a.jpg
